The importance of thoroughly chewing your food cannot be overemphasized! Digestion starts in the mouth. The mouth is the first part of our digestive tract . If you do not chew your food completely, the nutrients in your food might exit the other end of your body without being absorbed. Most people say "You are what you eat" but nutritionists usually say "You are what you absorb."
One of my favorite quotes on this topic is "chew your liquids and drink your solids." In other words, mix your liquids with your saliva by chewing them and chew your solid food until it turns into liquid.
If you are prone to gobbling your food, try putting down the fork or spoon between each bite and not picking it up again until the mouth is empty.
It is difficult to fully enjoy your food unless you eat it slowly. Appreciate the fragrance and colors of each piece of food before you put it into your mouth. Enjoy the subtle flavors and texture of the food before you swallow it. The benefits of this style of eating can have a profoundly positive effect on your digestion and ultimately your health!
